If burnout is often met with unhelpful responses…what should managers say instead?

You don’t need the perfect words. But you do need to create space for an honest conversation.

A few simple ways to start:

• “I’ve noticed you don’t seem yourself lately, how are things for you at the moment?”

• “I can see you’ve got a lot on. What’s been feeling most challenging?”

• “Would it help to talk through what’s on your plate and what feels manageable right now?”

• “What kind of support would make the biggest difference for you at the moment?”

Notice the difference, these aren’t solutions, they’re invitations.

They show you’re paying attention. They give permission to be honest, and they open the door to understanding what’s really going on.

Because supporting someone through burnout doesn’t start with fixing, it starts with listening!
